Lloydminster, AB/SK – The City of Lloydminster is issuing a reminder on seasonal road safety following a speeding incident this past weekend.

On Saturday, June 2, 2018 a Lloydminster Community Peace Officer observed a vehicle travelling at 171 km/h in an area with a posted speed limit of 80 km/h. The Peace Officer conducted a traffic stop and the operator of the vehicle was issued an offence notice of $584; additionally, the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

“The potential outcome of this sort of driving is predictable and preventable; furthermore, it unnecessarily puts citizens at risk,” said Glenn Alford, Senior Manager, Public Safety. “As the weather warms, we must be particularly aware of increased cyclist and pedestrian movement, children at play, construction work and the addition of motorcycle traffic.”

In late 2017, City Council voted in favour of Lloydminster’s participation in the Vision Zero program, a comprehensive road-safety initiative focused on reducing traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. Launched in Sweden in 1997, the Vision Zero program got the world’s attention after cutting Sweden’s traffic death by half in just two decades.

“While we, as a municipality, have committed to the Vision Zero program, it is important our local drivers do their part to keep roadways safe for all road users,” said Alford.

It's nice to see that a fairly new program is receiving some good press.

Keep up the good work!
